Watches You Can Wear At The Wheel
written by A.Morgan - 16th Jan 2012
There’s nothing more relaxing and rewarding than going out for a good drive, and what better accompaniment could there be than some fast, flowing road and a superb driver’s watch. You’ll have to find a good road or track yourself, but we can at least give you some great ideas for what you can wear on your wrist when you’re there.
How about a Panera Ferrari Scuderia Chrono 1/8th Second (Image 1)? Packed with features like a split-second foudroyante chronograph, the 45mm Panerai is a rare beast, but an attractive one nonetheless. The typical Panerai cushion case has even more shape and style, and the large, knurled crown matches the screw-down pushers. The track-day choice.
One of the best known and well-loved races in the world, the Mille Miglia, graces the dial of the Chopard Gran Turismo XL (Image 2). The big, guage-like design, the polished, sculpted case and the vintage tyre-print rubber strap leave you in no uncertainty that the Chopard is the classic enthusiast’s pick.
Clean and clinical, the Porsche Design P6000 (Image 3) is a serious tool for the budding racer, completely functional with no excess. Titanium construction makes it super-light and super-comfortable, and even the winding rotor is formed of a hollowed out latticework to save weight, much like the wheels on racing cars built by the watch’s namesake.
Having garnered its title from the famous cross-country race through America in the 1950’s, the Carrera Calibre 1 Vintage (Image 4) is sleek, simplistic class. Inspired by the speedometers of period racers, the Calibre 1 Vintage is as at home on the race track as it is in the driver’s club afterwards.
