Omega’s New Old Seamaster

written by A.Morgan - 2nd Aug 2011

A limited edition Omega is probably as surprising as rain in England, but this time it’s something really special. When the Seamaster was originally launched in 1948, it was a sleek, slender and actually quite formal watch that possessed (at the time) incredible water resistance. As sports watches become more popular, Omega joined the fray with the Seamaster 300, and so the original, classic design was left in the dark.

Well, that is until now. The perhaps slightly tenuous link to the 2012 Olympics (Omega’s twenty-fifth as official timekeeper) can be overlooked quite readily for several reasons with the Seamaster 1948 Co-Axial ‘London 2012’ Limited Edition – firstly, any mention of the Olympics is kept strictly to the back of the case, secondly, it isn’t ridiculously big and thirdly, it is utterly stunning. Even the 18ct gold medallion mounted on the back of the 39mm case has a certain classiness about it.

There is one problem though – it is a limited edition. Although one thousand, nine hundred and forty eight may seem like a big number, a watch of this calibre won’t be hanging around for long. It just looks too good. With any luck Omega will continue to produce this watch as a non-limited piece after the initial run, perhaps with a clear sapphire caseback to view the Caliber 2202 movement inside. We will have to wait and see!

Much prefer the formal Omega watches, shame about the tacky Olympic logo. What were they thinking?
